Shoulder Dislocation
I have had an anterior / inferior dislocation 8.5 weeks ago after crashing out of a
motorcross race.It had to be reduced under general anesthetic and was extremely
painful for the 1st week. If I didn't brace myself with my good arm while being
driven around a cornerin a car, it felt like my shoulder was being cut with a blunt
saw.
I began physio within a week of the injury and am now seeing a physiotherapist
twice a week and have been doing about an hour of rehab/exercise each day. I still
do not have a full range of motion yet. There is still pain when trying to get my arm
above my head, and I can only do this assisted.
My shoulder does not work in the same way as the good one - the visual difference
is very apparent. My trapezious muscle is a bit painful to contract and the shoulder
doesn't have the same "dip" in it when I extend my arm forward - with my good one,
the tissue sort of has a dip in it between my collarbone and the top of my humerus
where the deltoid muscle ends.
The orthapedic surgeon who reviewed the injury two days after my reduction said
there is probably a tear in the rotator cuff and perhaps the glenoid, but that I
shouldn't require surgery as this is the 1st time that I have had such an injury.
I am worried that I will not regain full range of normal movement If I have tissue
tears which can't bridge the gap and re-attach. I've made an appointment to see
a surgeon in four weeks time. He specialises in shoulder surgery.
It's probably a good time to see him as that will be the 3 month mark - the expected
time frame for full movement to come back. If I still don't have a normal range of
movement by then, then I'll be extremely concerned.
