COMMUNITY: Patient Stories

Two years Later

I can still recall painful, sleepless, nights. I remember the many things I wanted but couldn’t do because my shoulders wouldn’t let me. My shoulders ached, not a little bit, but, a lot and all the time. Cortisone shots, a variety of therapies and lots of ice helped me through three decades of pain in my shoulders. A surgically repaired rotator cuff helped a little for a while but the pain and motion restrictions came back. About two and a half years ago, after every other conceivable option was exhausted, I was led to Dr. Peter J Millett an orthopedic surgeon practicing at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA. Except for some very special events having to do with family, children and grandchildren, meeting Dr. Millett was possibly the best thing that ever happened to me. Fortunately, for me, Dr. Millett remained in the Boston area long enough to replace both my shoulders. Two and a half years ago he replaced one and, a year and a half ago he did the other. My complete confidence in his skills has been rewarded many times over. I can never thank him enough for all he did for me. Besides his extraordinary talent as a surgeon, he got me through my replacement shoulders with his kindness and caring attitude. Soon, I’ll be 69 years old. I can sleep nights, without pain and on either shoulder I wish. I’m back at the gym, feeling stronger than I have for a long time. Although I don’t know of any, if there’s some point in a range of motion that I don’t have, I don’t need it. At this writing, I judge my shoulder surgeries completely successful. Dr. Millett is currently practicing at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Vail Colorado. It’s easy for me to say, he must be at or very near the top orthopedic surgeon in the world. I don’t sit at my computer all day or even every day but, from time to time I try to see what’s going on in the “Shoulder1 forum. If there’s a question out there for me, I will answer it as soon as I see it. Meanwhile, to anyone out there who has only the shoulder replacement option left, I can say with complete certainty, if I had to do it again, given the opportunity to have Dr. Millett or someone equally qualified do it, I would sign up for it in a heartbeat.
